“I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions.” Stephen Covey
No matter the season of our lives, we can’t create a life we haven’t defined. That’s still true during one’s final years when serious illness or debility arrives. Spring isn’t exactly the time to finish a book about dying as I did this morning. A strange juxtaposition. And yet, finishing Being Mortal by Atul Gawande, I realize it’s really a book about living. Perfect timing.
Dr. Gawande encourages us to contemplate such questions as, what is most important to you under the circumstances? What does it mean to you now to live a meaningful life? What are your hopes and fears?
Each of us has the power to define how much, if any, medical intervention we want and when. Berecz & Associates, PLC is committed to doing our part to make our community one of those, like LaCrosse, Wisconsin, where 90% of its residents have an advanced directive or health care power of attorney (“Health Care POA”). This is the document that let’s YOU decide. http://www.npr.org/sections/money/2014/03/05/286126451/living-wills-are-the-talk-of-the-town-in-la-crosse-wis
Spring in our office means it’s time for Gloria’s Gift. Every year, we offer advice and a free Health Care POA in honor of my friend, Gloria Hippler, who died three years ago this Spring*. Fortunately, she had such a document and I personally witnessed the comfort it gave her family to know her wishes at the end. We aren’t just offering a fill-in-the-blank form which no doubt can be found online. Rather, we will explore the options available, explain ramifications that aren’t obvious and guide you through the layers of decisions available as you contemplate your wishes.
Simply call and request your Gloria’s Gift from the first day of Spring to May 30 and when you walk out with your own Health Care POA, your name will be put in a drawing to win a copy of Being Mortal. So this Spring, it’s really two free gifts! Be the one to decide and call for your free gifts today.
Wishing you wisdom,
